Abbey in the distance with a gentle sea in the foreground
Iona Abbey and Nunnery is a real gem for anyone visiting the Isle of Iona. It’s one of the oldest and most sacred sites in Scotland, dating all the way back to the 6th century when Saint Columba arrived here from Ireland. He set up a monastery that became a key centre for Celtic Christianity, and the abbey you see today is built on that incredible history.

Walking around the abbey is like stepping into another world. The atmosphere is so calm and reflective, with beautiful stonework and ancient carvings that have survived the centuries. You’ll find everything from medieval gravestones to Celtic crosses, each with its own story to tell. There’s even a small museum with fascinating artefacts, including a collection of gorgeous old stone crosses.

One of the highlights has to be the peaceful cloisters, with arches that frame views of the abbey grounds. It’s the perfect spot to just sit and soak up the silence. Inside the abbey itself, the architecture is stunning, especially in the main hall where light streams in through stained glass, giving the whole place a kind of magical glow.

The abbey is still a pilgrimage site, so it’s a place where people come to reflect, but you don’t have to be religious to appreciate the sense of history and serenity here. Whether you’re interested in the past, spirituality, or just want to enjoy a quiet, beautiful space, Iona Abbey is well worth the visit.
