Edinburgh and the Lothians

Scotland's Historical and Cultural Centre
Edinburgh
Edinburgh and the Lothians form one of the most historically and culturally significant regions of Scotland. Edinburgh, the capital city, is the heart of the area, known for its rich history, stunning architecture, and cultural landmarks. The city’s skyline is dominated by Edinburgh Castle, which sits atop an ancient volcanic rock. There is also the Royal Mile, a historic street connecting the castle to Holyrood Palace, the official residence of the British monarch in Scotland.
Edinburgh blends medieval charm with Georgian elegance, particularly visible in areas like the Old Town and New Town, both UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The city is also renowned for its cultural festivals, including the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, the world’s largest arts festival, and the Edinburgh International Festival, drawing performers and visitors from around the globe.
West Lothian/Midlothian
Beyond the capital, the Lothians — West Lothian and Midlothian — offer a diverse landscape. There are rolling hills, picturesque coastal villages, and historic towns. West Lothian is home to attractions like Linlithgow Palace, the birthplace of Mary, Queen of Scots, while Midlothian features sites like Rosslyn Chapel, famous for its intricate carvings and associations with the Knights Templar.
East Lothian
East Lothian boasts beautiful beaches and golf courses, such as those in North Berwick and Gullane, as well as historical landmarks like Tantallon Castle.
The region is characterised by its easy access to nature, offering numerous walking trails. The Pentland Hills Regional Park is just outside Edinburgh and has many scenic coastal paths along the Lothian coastline. Together, Edinburgh and the Lothians offer a combination of urban sophistication, rural tranquillity, and a deep connection to Scotland’s history and culture.
