Beautifully coloured houses on a stretch of water
Tobermory is the postcard-perfect main town on the Isle of Mull, known for its vibrant harbourfront with a line of colourful buildings that look like something out of a storybook.

Founded in 1788, this little town is packed with charm and has become one of the most photographed spots in the Hebrides. Walking along the waterfront, you’ll find all kinds of quirky shops, cosy cafés, and seafood restaurants serving fresh local catches.

The town is also home to Tobermory Distillery, which has been making whisky here since 1798. It’s a popular stop for visitors interested in sampling traditional single malts or the island’s own gin. The distillery tour is a great way to learn about the local history and see how Tobermory’s unique flavours come together.

For families, there’s the Mull Aquarium, a small but engaging spot that’s actually Europe’s first catch-and-release aquarium. It gives visitors a chance to learn about the marine life around Mull, and because it’s a community aquarium, every creature goes back into the sea after a short stay.

Tobermory has a laid-back, friendly feel, and the surrounding area is perfect for scenic walks and wildlife spotting. From the hills above town, you can get stunning views of Tobermory Bay, especially on a clear day when you can see out to the Ardnamurchan Peninsula.

It’s also a great base for exploring more of Mull and beyond. With boat trips leaving from the harbour, you can easily hop over to Staffa or the Treshnish Isles for a chance to see puffins, seals, and other wildlife. Whether you’re wandering through the shops, tasting local seafood, or just soaking up the view, Tobermory captures the essence of island life with a splash of colour and a big dose of character.
