Claire and Lucy’s Road Trip! Part 1 – Glenfinnan

Glenfinnan monument on a sunny day
Friends Claire and Lucy who live in Central Scotland share their amazing road trip to some of the most beautiful Scottish Destinations ... first stop Glenfinnan!

It was the school October holidays so we packed our bags and headed on our road trip.

If you’re a Harry Potter fan, you’ll recognise the viaduct instantly—it’s where the Hogwarts Express chugs along, and seeing the Jacobite Steam Train cross it in real life is an absolute thrill. There’s a viewpoint nearby that gives you the best angle, so be sure to get there early for a good spot!

Just a short walk away is the Glenfinnan Monument (pictured), standing tall at the head of Loch Shiel. Knowing that this is where Bonnie Prince Charlie raised his standard makes you feel like you’re part of history. And when you climb up to the top of the monument, you’re greeted with the most incredible view of Loch Shiel stretching into the distance, surrounded by rugged Highland peaks.

Then there’s Loch Shiel itself, which is breathtaking in every direction. You can stroll along its shores or, if you’re feeling adventurous, hop on a boat tour for a closer look at the loch and maybe spot some local wildlife—eagles, deer, maybe even an otter if you’re lucky! It’s so peaceful here, the kind of place where you just want to soak in the scenery and never leave.

If you walk a little further, there’s a lovely stone church that sits on a hill with views back toward the loch. It’s quiet and tucked away, perfect for taking a breather and enjoying the moment.

The whole area has a magical feel, especially if you come early or late in the day to avoid the crowds. And if you’re into photography, get ready to fill up your memory card because every angle is just that beautiful. Glenfinnan is the kind of place that feels like a dream come true, and leaving is harder than you’d expect—it’s just that stunning!
