The Isle of iona

A small Enchanting island
The Isle of Iona is a small, enchanting island in Scotland’s Inner Hebrides, just a short ferry ride from the Isle of Mull. Known for its deep spiritual roots, Iona is a place where history, legend, and stunning scenery come together. It’s here that Saint Columba arrived in the 6th century, bringing Christianity to Scotland. The abbey he founded still stands, drawing pilgrims and visitors who are captivated by its peaceful beauty and the stories it holds.
Close to the abbey, you’ll find St. Oran’s Chapel and Reilig Odhráin, an ancient burial ground believed to be the resting place of early Scottish kings. This history gives Iona a special atmosphere, making a simple stroll feel like stepping back in time. Another highlight is the Iona Nunnery, a partially ruined structure covered in ivy, where you can sense the quiet strength of the women who once lived there.
Iona is also a natural gem, with crystal-clear beaches like Columba’s Bay, where smooth, colourful pebbles cover the shore. This spot is thought to be where Saint Columba first landed, and many people take a stone home as a keepsake. Seals, seabirds, and even dolphins sometimes make appearances, adding a touch of wild beauty to the experience.
Getting to Iona is an adventure on its own. After crossing Mull, you’ll take a small ferry over to the island. Cars are limited here, so you’ll be exploring on foot, soaking up the island’s tranquil, almost magical vibe. For centuries, Iona has inspired poets, writers, and artists, and it’s easy to see why.
